Soakings are good.. usually when the urates get that hard then the torties are needing more water.
Dehydration will cause rock hard white urates.

Destiny became constipated one summer in July and I could tell she didn't feel well. She sat with her eyes closed & she was straining. We took her for a ride in the car which always makes her go. She did, it took a long time to get her to go but she did & it was very dry looking.
I realized as I looked around our yard, it'd been so long since it had rained that even with watering the lawn with the sprinklers the grass was crunchy when I walked on it because it was so dry. She was eating nothing but dry food so I got some greens from the grocery store & fed them to her after I'd soaked them in water & they were dripping wet.
She ate them, the next day she pooped normally so I realized that I need to add some very wet food to her diet when it's extremely dry outside.
