Rubber/Plastic Bands Around Turtles

Someone posted here that they'd found a turtle like, this(in a grotesque shape due to being bound around the shell,) and I can tell you how come.



The Chinese practice this. I see hundreds of them 'bound by plastic bands' when they're hatchlings over here in Taiwan. They apparently want to shape them to look oblong. It may have some religious cannotations.



If any of you find any like this in the states, you should contact some authorities to see if this is right.
