Yes, they can brumate on land or in the water.

The mid 50's is a little too high. Can it be done? Yes, but you are risking weight loss and illness. Having said that...I know people that keep their Wood turtles outdoors in areas where the winter temperatures typically stay above 50 without issue. Typical duration is from December to February, though. Many keepers in warmer areas prefer to place their NA Woods in a refrigerator at about 45 degrees F for 3 or 4 months. More than anything, they claim that this practice increases breeding success.
