Boston (AP): The New England Aquarium joined a New Year’s tradition usually reserved for hospitals on Tuesday by announcing the arrival of the year’s first babies.
But these babies were green and slithery.
One of the aquarium’s three adult anacondas, named Ashley, gave birth at about 5 a.m. on New Year’s Day to 14 babies, each about two-feet long.
The litter was actually small for an anaconda, which can give birth to several dozen young at once.
It is fairly unusual for large constrictors to give birth in captivity, according to the aquarium, and the anaconda birth was a first for the Boston-based aquarium.
The young anacondas will be cared for at the aquarium for at least a month before being made available to other aquariums and zoos.
