Kolkata: Shahid Mullick never read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 'Speckled band', where Grimsby Roilot murdered his stepdaughter using an Indian Viper, but he used almost the same technique to kill his wife, without leaving any evidence, at a remote village in West Bengal.
On Thursday, the 35-year-old weaver was pronounced guilty by the court and awarded life sentence.
To kill his second wife, Shahid, a resident of Kinupota village of Nakashipara, used a snake bought from a snake charmer. He almost succeeded in his mission. On October 9, 2004, his second wife Hawa Bibi died, and snakebite was established as the cause.
However, Hawa's aunt Noorshan Biwi and father Khuda Baksh smelt a rat. Khuda Baksh approached the local police station to register a complaint but was turned down by the cops. He then moved court against the police.
Six months after Hawa Bibi's death, a Krishnagar court ordered a probe into the death. And finally, Khuda Baksh was proved right. The court found Shahid guilty of killing his second wife.
Sub-Inspector Arup Paul, who probed the case, said some villagers had seen Shahid carry a bag similar to the one found with the snake skin. Then, one of the villagers told police that he had seen a similar bag with Golap Sheikh, a local snake charmer.
During interrogation, Golap confessed that days before Hawa's death, Shahid had bought a viper from him for Rs 700. Following this, Shahid admitted that he had tied the snake with a rope and slid it into Hawa's room.
