I don't think it's done for any other reason than trying to offer a prey item a snake will take. I used to have some Olive Pythons, and one would only take quail, so that's why I bought them....and subsequently sold them! I've never had to resort to Quail for my Dumerils, but wouldn't hesitate trying them if nothing else (mice/rats) seemed to be working.
