The tinctorius group are a little easier to sex by the time they are sub-adults--10 months old or so. The males have larger, more fluted appearing front toe pads, while the front toe pads of the females are only slightly larger than those on the hind feet. The females are usually somewhat larger with a hunched back stance, while the males tend to sit flatter and lower.

On an average, the cost of the citronellas is probably around $60.00 each, and around $250.00 for a mated pair. You need to check around with different breeders, as I'm just guessing, based on other tinc morph prices.

If you aren't able to afford a sexed pair, the next best thing would be to purchase just two frogs for the same tank, which should be at least 20 to 30 gallons with a broad "footprint," i.e. a good amount of floor space, vs. a "tall" tank. Watch carefully for aggression or signs of stress in either frog. You should separate them if this occurs, as females in particular can be very territorial, and bullying can end up in the death of the bullied frog even before you notice much deterioration in its health. On the other hand, if you just happen to get two females, they may get along as long as no male or third frog is around. Experiences vary with this. I've found they sometimes do, but at others, begin to intimidate even as froglets to young juveniles. Two males are more likely to get along together than the females. Behavior can vary with different individuals, so you may find many views on this. Any reputable breeder will give you his own honest recommendations, as well.

Sexed pair of D. (tinctorius) azureus. Female on left, male on right. Notice his broader front toes and lower head stance.
