DALLAS MORNING NEWS (Texas) 08 March 08 Rattlesnake Round-Up offers a bite to eat The 50th annual World's Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up is under way in Sweetwater in West Texas. Featuring a parade and pageant Thursday, snake-handling demonstrations Friday and today along with a cook-off, the weekend wraps up Sunday with a rattlesnake meat-eating contest. The roundup is sponsored by the Sweetwater Jaycees but was started by a group of area farmers and ranchers as an attempt to combat an abundance of rattlers. The roundup, one of several in Texas, generally brings about 30,000 visitors to Sweetwater, but officials said they expected more for the anniversary event this year. More than 10,000 pounds of snake is normal; the 1982 event set a record at 17,986 pounds. Rattlesnake Round-Up offers a bite to eat
