From your explanation it is really difficult to pin down a species that would be ideal for you.

How big is too big? Adult dumeril's need a 4 x 2 foot cage. A lot of people would rather not devote a space in their house for that size cage. Dum's are usually a very calm and easy to handle snake, but as I mentioned, they are a bit larger.

Do you want your kids to be able to handle the snake? If so, I would highly recommend a ball python, children's python, or spotted python. As far as boas go, smaller species such as Nics could work, although they still sometimes get very large depending on how pure their bloodline is. Sand boas and rosy boas are really neat, but they are quite small. All of the snakes I listed above, your children could handle with out having you have to spot an end.

IMO, do web searches and decide what species you like. Find a breeder, or go to a reptile show and handle some adults, and get a feel for their size and attitude.
