Hi,

Go ahead and start over. Read the directions very
carefully on start-up. You don't want to manually
fill the cannister. Just fill the intake tube. When
the top on the cannister is snapped into place, it should
begin to fill on its own. Prime the intake tube with
a glass or two of water(instructions). You should hear
the water starting to fill the cannister itself. Wait
the time per instructions (several minutes) and then
plug the unit in. The air should be expelled as the
unit begins to work.

Try this and if you are still having problems, let me
know. My husband generally takes care of the filter
and has not had any problems. I have been quite happy
with this filter.
