I've been using Aquatic Pond soil ( Turface). This stuff is the real deal! Allen Repashy is going to be selling it as a product called 'super hatch' and Matt Parks at Pangea should have it for sale sometime in the near future. This stuff can hold up to 10X the moisture of perlite by weight, and you can literally see when it's wet/dry which makes it really easy to tell when to add water.
