Sometimes they have difficulty swallowing large items and "gaping" allows them to adjust the ligaments in there throat to accamodate the large item. I feed my Jackson's Dubia blaptica (guyanese roaches) and they will gape after swallowing a large one. Hope this helps. Good luck.
