If you are photographing, the best "trap" is patience.

Find a comfy spot and have a seat, keep motions to a minimum, no smoking (snakes have great sniffers) and wait for it.

If you were to catch a black racer, it's not going to pose for you. (sorry to sound sarcastic...it's just me)

Any sort of trap poses the risk of injury, if not from the trap hardware, the animal will certainly freak out and could injure itself attempting to escape.

A decent zoom lens and a decent camera help too.
