yes they are washable, and you don't need to scrub them. just soak them in hot water with a small amount of bleach for about half an hour when you want to disinfect (you shouldn't have to do this often, usually rinsing with plain water is sufficient), rinse thoroughly and dry thoroughly. let them sit in the sun for a couple hours if possible. you can also use a product called "healthy habitat" by "natural chemistry" to spray on areas you have cleaned. it's natural and non-toxic but breaks down food and waste residue.
