You can tell by the very broad flat head and the elongate angular parotoid glands (the big lump over each shoulder). The large native toad in your area, the southern toad, will have two rounded 'horns' between the eyes; there's a picture of one in the thread "What kind of frog/toad did I catch?" a couple spaces below this thread.
