I think from a crested gecko's viewpoint, a big thing coming at them from above (when you're reaching for it) is much more threatening than a warm surface to crawl on (when it's on your arm). I find it helps to try to get them out of the cage when they're sort of asleep, then let them wake up on your hand. I handle mine around 5:30-6:00PM, just before I turn of his light.
