Your son sounds adorable
Lets see...for american toads you need: 15-20 gallon tank, 2-4 inches of loose dirt/organic substrate, a few inche of leaf litter, a small water dish or gradual slope to a water area, and a lid. You don't really need a light, but with live plants it helps a lot. I would use pothos or native plants. They eat crickets, for an adult the largest size is good, feed 2-4 times a week, 3-8 crickets each time depending on size and age of the toad.

If you send me pics via email I can give you an age estimate (be sure to include a standard, i.e. a ruler or a dollar bill) and tell you how you should be feeding roughly. My email is otis07_@hotmail.com if you want to send me pics.
