I have used many different systems of drainage, and can honestly I do not prefer one over the other. The good thing about false bottoms is that they are a lot lighter than if you were to use gravel, or even a light drainage such as leca. If you have a waterfall it helps to use a false bottom, but you can easily avoid doing one by hiding the pump under a piece of driftwood or something along those lines.
