In Indiana , they are State Endangered, so you would need some sort of permit. They used to be quite common in certain parts of downtown Indianapolis. I have seen them in western Indiana as well. I have found them to be common in a specific locale for a short period of time, then never see them again in the same area- even in un-developed areas. They spend a good chunk of time in crayfish burrows from what I gather.
