Tiger salamanders are notoriously difficult to breed in captivity. In the wild, they are opportunistic breeders. They breed whenever the local wet season happens to be in the locality they are found. In California, for example, the breeding season is in winter. In other areas, it may be summer or spring. They spend most of the dry season underground, not eating much. And they emerge during rains to feed. When the rains have sufficiently filled the ponds, then they will breed. It is difficult to duplicate this sort of condition in captivity.



As another poster has pointed out, it may be best to set up an enclosure outdooors and let them live and breed under semi-natural conditions. The enclosure must have an impenetrable bottom and sides, because they can dig their way out by making a tunnel. Tiger salamanders do not just use animal burrows. They are fully capable of digging their own tunnels.
