Most temperate reptiles need to be cylced to breed. I'm not sure just how cool they NEED to get. We have cycled females in the cage by just turning the heat off, but have never attempted it this way with males. I have read that a lot of reptiles need the cooler temps of brumation to produce viable sperm, but like I said I don't know just how cool chucks NEED to get for good sperm production.
