Everything I've experienced and read indicates that it can take many months to make some headway. My guy is 18 months old, and about 8-9" SVL. He still acts like yours. He's on edge when he's outside of the cage, but likes to come out and free roam. He opens the door (or I open it), and he walks around. I pick him up and he settles a bit and walks around on my shoulder. We recently moved and now he's antsy again.

Some things I've found are to just handle him a lot after the initial settling in period. I try to make it positive...I give him a treat and then he goes outside to bask. I've had him for about 9 months now. There is improvement...but I think he's going to be skittish until he gets some size on him. He also went through a weird breeding season thing and his appetite is down and he's real territorial.
