In college I actually had a scarlet king (which I'd collected myself in the Okeetee area) that spent most of its time coiled in plain sight on top of a slab of pine box. I hasten to add that this snake was a glaring exception!

And to support Chris' other point, I no longer have this animal because it managed to escape from a tightly-closed plastic shoe box!
