I inherited a wild caught squirrel frog (Hyla squirella) from a friend a few months back that has now developed an eye infection of some sort. One eye has a thickened, white, ulcer type infection that is over posterior third of the eye. THe iris/pupil area is not involved. There is no discharge or blood, and has not expanded. THe frog has been in captivity for four years and was mature at its capture in southern Florida. The infection has not responded to anti-fungal eye treatments. I live in an area devoid of herp vets, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or ideas. The frog is probably nearing the end of its life, given its age, and i believe it is male. Its terraium has no mold or fungus rowing, though it does have potted plants. The frog shares a terraium and pond with a CB Polyedates sp., who does not show any signs od illness, and whose eyes are clear. Both frogs are active, eager eaters. the eye issue does not seem to cause pain or inhibit the frog in any way, but i worry that it may be contagious or a problem further along. The frog has had this issue for over a month and seems no worse for the wear. I am begining to think that it may be a latent virus, similar to herpes or papilloma, but again, if anyone has ideas or info/suggestions, they would be much appreciated!
