At a young age they are very skittish. If you just got him then dont handle him for the first week or two. Let him get used to his surroundings and calm down. He will be stressed for a few days until he gets used to his new home.

After a couple weeks then start working with him. I dont mean just reach right in and pick him up. This will not work, as he will continue to run away from you. Work slow, start out by just reaching in to change his food and water. Then as he gets used to you doing this, keep moving closer to where he is sitting. Eventually you will be able to touch him or even pet him. Once this happens it is time for you to try picking him up. If he lets you then go ahead, but if he doesnt then go back to just reaching in to change his food and water. It can be a slow long process, but it varies with each Iguana.
