I have a female buttermilk racer I caught a little over a month ago. I'm pretty sure she is gravid because her back half looks extremely fat compared to her tail and the scales appear to be stretched a little. I've never bred snakes and I'm unsure what to do about it. She recently started being very very active compared to her normal behavior and I'm worried she may lay soon. When do racers normally lay their eggs? She looks like she's fat enough to drop any day now.

If anybody could give me some info on how to prepare the tank so she can lay the eggs and what to do with them after she lays them I would appreciate it.

The female shed her skin about a week ago, maybe slightly more. She ate a mouse a day or two after shedding.

I've heard that racer eggs do not need additional heat, so does that mean I do not need an incubator? I assume I put a laying box with sphagnum moss or vermiculite in the tank.

Thanks for any help.
