Is it always about the same time of year in your location? I collected toads and spawn in the North of England about the 8th April. that's normal for them. Some have metamorphosised already and are hopping about. Loads simply died and disappeared in my garden pond practically overnight. The successful ones were in about an inch of water in a tank in a shed and they were getting front legs within 2 months. Any sort of artificial environment seems to cause a huge range of development-tiny tadpoles alongside complete toadlets. Strange!
