Blanding's or Diamondbacks at JFK?

This is SORT of a “what kind of turtle?” question...I didn’t know where else to post it.



As I’m sure you have all read the story in the news today about 78 turtles crawling out onto the tarmac at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Wednesday and briefly shutting it down.



I originally read the report on NBC’s NY site

As you can see the photo accompanying the article is a Blanding’s Turtle.



Later on MSNBC web site they reported that John Kelly a spokesman from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey had identified the turtles as Diamondback terrapins ARTICLE HERE



And this makes MUCH more sense...for many reasons.



Is there any chance, however slim, that those WERE Blanding’s and that the Port Authority was wrong? This would be a VERY unusual occurrence of this animal...wouldn’t it?!
