Packing tape or vegetable oil

If you put a strip of packing tape, sticky side down and smooth side out around the inside top of the cage, they can't get out. They can't make it across that slick tape. You can also put a two inch or so swath of vegetable oil along the inside top, and that will provide a barrier as well.
