I buy chicks frozen. I feed the chicks whole, intact, and I assume the yolk, being stored nutrients from the egg in the young chick are a valued component of the food package. Chicks are an important part of the diet, but are usually fed with other whole animals including rodents, quail, very occasionally fish, snakes, frogs. In reviewing an analysis of food values, I was pleasantly surprised to find chicks relatively high ranking as a food item. I feed chicks whole! Good luck, Vic H.
