I found this toad (pictures below) with many many others of it's kind on Kiawah Island, SC in early June. Despite my efforts to find an identification online, I could not. At first I was convinced it was the southern chorus frog, buuut the website said most of those were lightly colored, whereas this frog/toad certainly wasn't.

The amphibians were around .75 inches (as you can tell from the pictures), and certainly not larger than 1 inch. There were lots of them around, so perhaps they had recently hatched. They were found about 6-8 meters from a lagoon, but across the street, so I don't know if they were from the lagoon or living mostly in the forest-ish area there.

Thanks for your help!
