Can you post some pictures. In my experience with poinsetti here in NM, they almost never try to bite. If they are poinsetti than the males generally have black markings on the ventral surface. Females tend to have a more distictly banded back and both sexes have distinctly black and white/grey bands on the tail. They also tend to have more laterally flattened bodies than most other Sceloporus (except other torquatus/jarrovi group Scelops). Hope this helps.
