>>I recently adopted a Cali. adult King Snake, I've had her for 3 days now. Today after putting her back in her tank, I noticed when my child went up to tank to look at her, she began to rattle her tip of tail like a Rattle Snake! I'm guessing this could explain why the tip of her tail is so hard compared to my cornsnakes tail, more like callused/hard. Did you ever hear of king snakes rattleing their tails? Also why do they do that? Any advice or help would be appreciated on this topic and king snakes in general. This is my first king snake. She is different then my cornsnake. Thank you

I have had a variety of snakes rattle. Corns, Kings, Pines, Gophers, Fox. Im quite sure everyone else will second this that there are many snakes that rattle. They may just not have the rattles. In underbrush it sounds the same however. This is a defensive move. "Im a big bad dangerous rattlesnake not a kingsnake, leave me alone." One thing I always suggest to people getting the new snake is to limit contact for at the very least the first two weeks. The rattling is a sign of either stress or excitement. I currently have a gopher snake here that rattles like crazy at feeding time. He is one of the most non-aggressive feeders I have, but the excitement gets me a rattle.
