Help ID ~ American or Southern?

A 50's guide described this an American but it was found on an island south of Charleston, SC within the range of the Southern Toad. I am not familiar with Toads and haven't found an updated source to classify this critter. Any help would be appreciated PLUS there's a surprise ending for the the correct answer(s). Thankssss....
