I work for a well known shipping company. Last night one of my co-workers noticed a box that had live turtles in it. Wouldn't have been a big deal if they were packaged properly, but no...
Some idiot put a couple turtles (I don't know what kind) in bags, and just put them in a box with a little newspaper, shipped it 2-day air, and didn't even put a ligit return address on it (the place it was going was the same as the return address)! We found 2 turtles that had beed badly jostled around in a too big box with no insulation and barely any packing material. That thing had probably been tossed, turned flipped and dropped. There wasn't even a 'fragile' note on it. We try to treat all packages gently, but when something like this is put through the general system instead of air, it can get stacked on the bottom in a semi-trailer with hundreds of pounds of stuff on top, and the quality of the box used was not something that could hold up to that, nor was it re-inforced in any way.
I brought the box to the appropriate supervisor, who opened it for inspection and immediately got on the phone with his boss. I hope there is some way they can track down the shipper, and that person is dealt with accordingly.
If you're going to ship reptiles make sure you package them properly!! The instructions given on shipyourreptiles are a perfect example to follow. ----- Allison
