The simple solution is to sprinkle a layer of soil WITHOUT visible perlite or limestone on the surface so it doesn't attract your cham's attention. Or, you can cover the soil surface with window screen held down with river stones too large for him to eat. Whether the soil below the surface has perlite isn't the issue, and in fact it will help your plants drain better.
