Were they plowing through it and getting it in their mouths while cruising? Mine don't burrow or rub much so besides feeding, which can be very active, I can't see mine getting a mouth full. I know when they were all small I was warned about such issues but with my group I have not seen any problems. When they were hatchlings I used paper due to the damp frozen thawed pups.
