City Considers Ban On Wild Hog Hunting

ROCKLEDGE, Fla. -- The city of Rockledge is considering an emergency ordinance to ban wild hog hunting. Some residents are complaining hunters are trespassing and even cutting down trees just to trap the wild animals.

WFTV walked around the neighborhood Wednesday morning and found there appears to be a dispute between two homeowners in the Timbers West subdivision off Fiske Boulevard. At City Hall Wednesday night, the city will look to take major action that will ban the use of bow and arrows on private property.

Neighbors have to deal with hunters who drag dead hogs down the road. The area is wooded, but directly across the road are several homes.

The dispute seems to have started two years ago, when one homeowner got upset that a hunter and another homeowner in the neighborhood killed a hog across the road from his property.

WFTV talked to a hunter who says it's ridiculous for the city to draft an emergency ordinance and doesn't feel it’s necessary.

“Absolutely not and, if so, it doesn't need to be done Gestapo style,” hunter Harvey Smith said.

“Is it worth it to draft an entire emergency ordinance over something that's clearly between two homeowners who don't get along?” WFTV reporter Daralene Jones asked Rockledge City Manager Jim McKnight.

“I'm just providing you the information and the county felt it was an issue of safety that it should be, at least for a period of time, should be looked into,” McKnight said.

Officials said that if any one was to violate the ordinance, if passed, they will first receive a warning and then they will be arrested.
