I would be VERY leary using a smaller male with larger female cal king. I have never produced hybrids, but I understand cal king females can be uber aggressive and kill and eat male cal kings during breeding efforts. This is something I will have to pay attention to next year when my pair of black and white cal kings are ready to breed. If the snakes were not brumated and the female is not ready to produce or feel "Love in the Air", this effect may be more dramatic and she may just view the smaller male hondo as lunch!!! My advice in dealing with hybridizing snake eating species is to make sure they were conditioned to breed (and are old/big enough to breed), and use a larger male. I have also heard that to get hybridization to occur between two different species, you may have to get the pair you plan to breed ready with other mates of like kind. In other words, get the male hondo in the mood with a female hondo, and the female cal king in the mood with a male cal king. Then when they are almost ready to breed, switch them up and put the pair you want to breed together. Your female may be large enough, but the male hondo seems kind of small. How old and large are the animals?
