Yep, the periscoping is pretty awesome. If you keep them in groups, sometimes they'll all come out and periscope together, especially if they know food is around. Interesting how territorial they can be. I have a large female western coachwhip that is banded, inside the cage, she's the boss, and has no problem letting blood fly. But once outside of the cage, she's like a kitten, and can't even be teased into biting.
I'd be interested in hearing more about beta carotine as a supplement. One keeper I know (sighthunter) has a home made mixture that he uses to supplement his animals with with some success, but if there's an easier way than boiling crayfish and grinding the shells into powder, I'd love to hear it
