how big is he? I know that most non-SDs are started on rat pinks and they move up from there.

Hell I feed my SD's on rat pups to begin with. My 09 SD's are about 2" long and take pretty big rat hoppers for there size., never mice unless my sand boas do the "kill and ignore thing" then they get them as a mid week leftover snack but thats not to often.
