In addition to letting him settle in, take an unwashed old t-shirt and cut a few strips from it. Place the strips in his cage with one in his hide. Snakes pick up scent very well and he will soon associate your scent with the safety of his cage and not the threat he feels you are now. This has worked very well for me in calming new snakes.
