Fitch supported this point of view as soon as 1963 in his monograph. It doesn't preclude that the "true" blue racer is a very handsome serpent though. Concerning their occurrence on the European market, it is determined by the demand which is by no means more important here than in the U.S. That's why only a very few taxa of racers, coachwhips, and whipsnakes are sometimes available from importers.
