Posted by: Thrasops at Mon May 3 19:30:15 2010 [ Report Abuse ] [ Email Message ] [ Show All Posts by Thrasops ] I came across this paper and was duly shocked by the assertions it makes on intra-specific social behaviour in Malpolon. I have kept Montpelliers before and have indeed witnessed their "self-anointing" behaviour but always assumed it was for water retention in a dry environment. I also have several species of Psammophis, and have actually seen this "anointing" behaviour BETWEEN individuals (almost like grooming, I suppose).
