It's a trick that I have seen work with night snakes, ringnecks, baby speckled racers, coachwhips, Oxybelis Aneus, etc. Also blood scenting works wonders with some snakes, get blood from a steak or hamburger meat and drench the food item in it. The strong scent of blood can be overwhelming for some snakes, this tends to work well for eastern hognose snakes and coachwhips but I have not tried it with smaller snakes.
