I do not think they are as similar morphologically as other snakes that are hybridized, even if they do seem to occupy the same general habitats. As far as "junk" snakes, check out the gartersnake and watersnake forums on this site. You will see there are many fans of both, and many interesting morphs of garters and waters have been produced.
