We keep all of ours on paper towels or newspaper for older leos with a humid hide box on one end, and on the other end a water dish and a food bowl that we keep calcium in with mealies 24/7. We then about once a week or so dust the mealies with vitamins and feed them that way.

I would not suggest sand. It's very messy to work with and over time can smell quite bad. I like something easy like towels or newspaper that can be removed completely once or twice a week and replaced all fresh and clean.
