i keep mine in the garage.my garage is partially insulated,(because of my frog),so it stays warmer than outside.the coldest it got in the garage was about 45,and thats when it was in the teens and snowing outside.i hibernate all my turtles that need it in the garage,haven't lost one yet,knock on wood.
if your garage does dip below freezing,i would add 2 or 3 more bags of dirt,and top that with some leaves,to kinda insulate them a bit.
are your boxies wc,or cb?also,are they native to where you live?
if they are native to where you live,then they should do just fine in the garage,seeing as they would naturally hibernate outside.just give them 2 or 3 months of cooler temps,and warm them back up gradually,and you should have boxies going at it in no time.
