Hi everyone again, and thanks for all the responses below. At the same time I posted that other question, I was on the Crested Gecko forum asking questions about geckos in relation to a hot CA house in the summer (room temps. of 85 sometimes). Someone responded today over there that a garter snake might be just as sensitive as a gecko to this. Is that true? I know now that the geckos can die. But I thought a garter snake might be tougher, maybe because the hot side of their cage is supposed to be in the high 80s, right? We do have a window unit AC that we run sometimes, but we don't run it round-the-clock. How would a Plains Garter be with the hot house situation? Maybe different Garter breeds might have different temperature needs, I hadn't thought of that before. I prefer snakes, my husband lizards. Maybe I should just let him get a bearded dragon after all. I've been resisting because they sound like too much work, and aren't as cute as snakes. But I know they wouldn't mind high temps (I think their basking spot is over 100). I don't know.
