First, be aware of the toxicity issues involved with amikacin and the potential for serious side effects or possible fatality if an incorrect dosage is given. Secondly, there is a good possibility that there are other effective antibiotics that could be used with a lesser degree of side effects depending on the diagnosis. Also, make sure that this treatment option is in line with the medical problem being addressed. For these reasons it would be advantageous to consult with a vet if possible.
However, the decision on which strength of amikacin to use is based mostly on the size of the snake. The smaller the snake, the better it is to use a low strength solution so you are able to more accurately measure the correct dosage. With larger snakes, it is better to use a high strength solution so you are able to inject the proper dosage using the lowest possible volume of this solution.
